What The Critics Say

  • "Without doubt, the definitive Call of Cthulhu monster guide... a full-color feast for the eyes and the absolutely essential compendium of Lovecraftian deities and denizens."

    — Andrew Logan Montgomery, Exploring the Otherworlds of Fiction, Magic, and Gaming.

  • "Looking back over twenty-five years of monster volumes for Call of Cthulhu, it's obvious that Chaosium's new two-volume Malleus Monstrorum is not just the best, but miles ahead of its predecessors. It's beautifully designed, gorgeously illustrated, and stunningly complete."

    — Shannon Appelcline, RPGNet Review.

  • "An important entry in the 7th Edition library... the breadth of the project is authoritative and all-inclusive. If I have a question about a Cthulhu Mythos monster this is probably the first place I'm going to go to now."

    — Dave Thaumavore, YouTube Review.

  • "Jaw-dropping... its exquisite art and its refined text make it one of the most striking publications of the current edition. Alongside The Grand Grimoire of Cthulhu Mythos Magic, it will be part of the wish list of all fans of the system."

    — Donjon Master, (review is in Portuguese)..

  • "The Malleus Monstrorum goes deep into the creation of a monster as an experience rather than a known thing... This is an excellent resource for those who want more out of the beasties in their game, or want to take a shot at creating their own cosmic horrors. All in all, Malleus Monstrorum sets an excellent standard for RPG bestiary collections, both now and in the future."

    — Never Read the Latin, Bestiary Review.

  • "9/10 - Malleus Monstorum is an absolute gem... Chaosium delivers a jam-packed two volume reference that blends flavor and mechanics to offer Keepers a detailed accounting of Mythos-based threats."

    — The Gaming Gang, A Monstrous Manual Reviewed.

  • "Five out of five eldritch tentacles – I think the slipcase is worth it just for the first book of monsters alone. What a horrifying and terrifying collection to rend investigators with and threaten to eat the heads of heroes."

    — Charles Dunwoody, ENWorld, Malleus Monstrorum Unboxing.

  • "A ton of great artwork; authoritative breadth and scope... an important addition to the Call of Cthulhu 7th edition library.."

    Almost Perfect

    Posted by Choirchick22 on 28th Sep 2020

Absolutely stunning amount of information. This is really an amazing addition to my Call of Cthulhu library. However, there is a saddening lack of illustrations. I was hoping that since it was so "Definitive" that it would have images of every monster. Too many pages are all text.

    A nice improvement!

Posted by nicholas Bariola on 1st Jul 2020

The books are well writen I like the guidelines on making new monsters or gods. It does seem to be lacking in artwork, not that the art work is bad, it just lacks art work. I also miss that they did not write the name of the author or book each quote comes from in the opening descriptions. It was nice to be able to read that quote and then look up the author and the book to see how the monster was in the original story.

EverythingChaosium has put out for 7th edition has been simply amazing. I have a copy of the 2006 Malleous Monstrorum and this is a drastic improvement. I cannot wait for the slip case hardbacks!

5/5 Design and Monster Rules, But Lack of Many Illustrations

Posted by JF Baconnet on 15th Jun 2020

As said in the subject, the design of the books follows the good guidelines of the 7th. But what is really striking (no need of Spot Hidden for it) is the lack of many illustrations (like Shantaks, Serpent People, Servitor of the Outer Gods, Lloigors!! etc...) I know there some are illustrations in the core book, but for a double one that regroup all the Mythos entities, to have at least one mid sized illustration would not be a luxury... The rest is 5/5, but one star less for it.

    Good but not perfect

Posted by Thibault Meyer on 15th Jun 2020

Very good book with a lot of content. The cover is exceptionally beautiful. However, I regret a little the lack of illustration for each creature. Still, I'm looking forward to acquiring the physical version.
