Chaosium Inc, publisher of the Call of Cthulhu and RuneQuest tabletop roleplaying games, welcomes acclaimed artist Ossi Hiekkala to the Chaosium team.
Ossi has formally joined the company as Staff Artist, working with fellow Staff Artist Loïc Muzy and Staff Cartographer Matt Ryan as part of the company's internal art team.
Based in Finland, Ossi studied graphic design in Rovaniemi, Lapland, followed by three years studying illustration in Japan. After almost 20 years illustrating in the commercial world for advertising and packaging, and having achieved acclaim for his art in boardgames (Flamme Rouge, Honshu and Hokkaido, Nanga Parbat, etc), Ossi has ventured into illustrating for tabletop roleplaying games for Chaosium.
Ossi says that RPGs were an essential element of why he turned to illustration: "In my early teens, RuneQuest was the first roleplaying game I ran. Call of Cthulhu was the second. Stormbringer may have been the third or fourth."
Ossi's work for Chaosium includes the covers for the RuneQuest Starter Set, RuneQuest: Weapons and Equipment, and the forthcoming Lords of the Middle Sea (shown above). He is also working on the official movie poster for our blockbuster actual play series Graveyards of Arkham.
You can also see Ossi's art inside Basic Roleplaying: Universal Game Engine (shown below, top), and titles in the new Cults of RuneQuest series including Cults of RuneQuest: The Earth Goddesses, Cults of RuneQuest: The Lightbringers, and most recently, Cults of RuneQuest: Mythology (shown below, bottom).
Ossi currently has a slate of art commissions underway for RuneQuest (below, middle), Call of Cthulhu, Pendragon, BasicRoleplaying, and Lords of the Middle Sea that will appear in coming releases.
